area residents apparently liked the plans for a recreation lake that were explained at a meeting at Brainard Thursday night The lake located southeast of Brainard is owned by the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District It was built on property acquired from George Pleskac and is known now only as Site 6C but NRD general manager Hal Schroeder says he expects it will be given a name in the future About 30 persons some of them NRD board members attended the public meeting at which the Omaha consulting firm of Schemmer representatives explained the preliminary plans for the facility The representatives David Ciaccio and Jerry Adamson said they had designed the facility based on local needs "We are not aiming at the people of Omaha and Lincoln but at the people who live within or 30 miles" Adamson said Built on an approximately 160-acre site the lake covers about 35 acres when full it was explained The planners visualized a "limited facility with the capability of provid-ing for 40 to 50 people at a time A picnic area with water and sanitation facilities would be located near the south entrance in the former homesite area Vehicle parking would be nearby Another area in the northwest part of the site was designated for about 12 recreation vehicles and space was planned for tent camping The planners said the lake is expected to attract fishermen and has already been stocked Because of the nature of the lake narrow and shallow at one end and steep slopes to a depth of about feet near the dam swimming in the lake will not be encouraged A recreation lake for swimming is under construction pJWUHIll: S7IIIC7I) immr and The GREAT OUTDOORS I venture to say that read several articles and seen several signs that read "Take A Kid And this is good you take youngsters fishing to teach them patience love of the outdoors and a sport that will last them for the rest of their life This is great do it But I also recommend that you think about the oldsters and take them fishing In towns and cities there are dose knit neighborhoods old folks homes retirees hospitals look around maybe you have some of these circumstances where you live you can bet your hook line ana sinker that there are senior citizens who would love to know how to fish telling you you can have one of the moat rewarding experiences ever have if you Just take a little timeand teach an oldie or two some simple ways to catch fish If you just stop and think about it some of these fine folks have spent a lifetime working and never had time to fish Now that they do have time there just a more enjoyable or relaxing activity than catching and eating fish If they afford fishing tackle why don't some of you fishing buddies get your heads together and see what you can come up with Vou could put a buck or two together and check with your sporting goods dealer tell him your plans and I'll bet my bottom dollar go along with you and give you a break on some starting tackle Cane poles are a good starter outfit for the leu active Spincast outfits for the more active Take your time and let them do the fishing You believe the happiness and joy you'll bring to these senior citizens as they learn to catch their first fish Teach them how to clean and cook their catch and you my fishing friend will have experienced the warmth of sharing the thrill of the great outdoors not a religious type fisherman but I believe if you will check the Bible you can find where Christ chose twelve Apostles and four of them were fishermen good enough for me I think go nearby in Saunders County they said A boat dock was also planned at the Brainard area lake but the planners said boat power should be restricted to electric trolling motors or gasoline engines less than six horsepower The lake is actually too small for boats with much more power they said which would also hinder fishing Some of audience suggested that all power boats be barred from the lake and added that there would be no need for a boat dock if only smaller craft are to be permitted to use the lake It was also suggested that a turning circle planned for use by recreation vehicles expected to be of the pickup camper variety often used by fishermen he deleted to prevent access to the interior by motor vehicles These and other sugges tions will be considered as the lake area is developed the planners said Schroeder said he expects to see many of the planned improvements completed within the next three to five years He said the maintenance cost of the lake and area will be paid by the NRD but he hopes to negotiate a maintenance agreement with the village of Brainard Land and Cattle team wins Lindsay tournament Land and Cattle Enterprises of Shelby won the 9th annual Lindsay Ipumament this past
