If so, how many? People often start out the year with good intentions of changing, but "set themselves up for failure" as they don't really plan how to take the right steps to change their habits. If your resolutions include losing weight, remember, it takes more than living on celery to become slender and healthy! As you try to change your eating habits, remember that sensible changes that you can live with will lead the way to better life-long nutrition.

If you'd like to read some information on the psychology of overeating, you might enjoy Diets Don't Work by Bob Schwartz. Check your library or local bookstores for this if you're interested. This book was on a list of good books about nutrition in the Tufts University Diet and Nutrition Letter. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it sounds interesting. Women in Agriculture Many of you in Polk-Butler-Colfax Counties are related to the field of agriculture in numerous ways, so mark your February calendars for our District's Women in Agriculture Conferences.

Fliers will be available the first part of January for the conferences, which will include workshops on understanding the farm financial statement, developing positive family communication skills, entering the job market, understanding the ag situation, and knowing your personality (using it in a way to communicate with family and others). The conferences will be four towns in our district: February 10 at Seward; February 18 at Tecumseh; February 24 at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center (near Gretna); and February 26 at Schuyler. More information will be available soon, so stop in for a flier and preregister by February 1 if possible. Overlock sewing machines perform limited number of functions You probably are seeing lots of ads and promotions for overlock sewing machines this season.

What are they? What do they do? Do you need one? Overlock sewing machines are special purpose machines that trim, stitch, and overcast a seam in one operation. Sometimes they are called sergers or overedge machines, says Rose Marie Tondl, extension clothing specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Overlocks perform a limited functions, but do them well and quickly, Tondl says. They are not meant to replace conventional sewing machines, but to be used with them. All overlock machines finish edges of fabric and can trim away part of the seam allowance in the process.

Some can be adjusted to make a close satin stitch on the raw edge the fabric. Some also roll the edge of the fabric, creating a narrow rolled hem. Most overlock stitches form a seam at the same time they finish the edge of the fabric. Seams made by overlock machines are generally flat and pucke This is helpful when sewing on silky fabrics and others that tend to pucker. The seams are moderately strong, but should be reinforced by conventional machine stitching in areas of stress.

According to Tondl, "If you do a lot of sewing, have a sewing business, want to increase your speed, or like your clothes and household textiles to have the same stitching as readymades, you may want to look at some of the overlock machines on the market." There are four types of overlock machines. Neesen family enjoys Christmas festivities Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Neesen, Schuyler, and Mrs.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Neesen accompanied by their son, John J. Neesen and Betty Ticher, visited with Julia Kuzel at Parkview Nursing Home, Dodge, Saturday afternoon.

In the evening they were guests at the home of Mrs. Lillian Neesen and Duane, Snyder, while her son, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Neesen, Amy and Stefania, Bloomsburg, were holiday guests.

Two-thread overlock machines primarily finish edges. They aren't designed to stitch a narrow seam. Three-thread overlocks are used to sew and finish seams or to finish seams that have been sewn on conventional machines. They can handle a variety of fabric weights and have slight stretch to accommodate knits. Some can be converted to twothreads.

There are two types of four-thread machines, Tondl said. One type (sometimes called a "true fourthread" or a "four-thread safety uses two threads to form a chainstitch seam and two threads to finish the edge. The chainstitch i is stable and not suitable for stretch seams in knits. Usually, the machine can be converted to stitch just the chainstitch or just the edge finish. The other type of four-thread is often called a "three-four thread" because it is similar to a three-thread with an extra row of stitching within the stitch.

The stitch is strong, but stretches with knit fabrics. It can be converted to a three-thread. shopping for an overlock machine, any lessons offered and study the manual carefully, Tondl said. James Havranek baptized Dec. 22 James Leonard, infant son of Mr.
