Many new drugs were introduced to help treat diseases. In addition to new drugs introduced for the first time, some older drugs found new uses. New methods for using these drugs were al so discovered. Cancer research made some very important advances with new drugs and different drug combinations. Many cancers that were untreatable now can be controlled, and the length and quality of life improved.

Vascular diseases such as coronary artery disease and high blood pressure can be more effectively treated with new drugs. Many of the unpleasant side effects of some of the drugs used can be controlled. Diseases such as angina can be better controlled; and in many cases, an almost normal life can be pursued. Louise A. Dvorak, Howells, 79. Your Health We realize that the cost of medical advances is high, but definite results are seen. According to actuarial data, in the last five years, one full year of life has been added to the life expectancy of a 65-year-old. This is very significant since in the previous 20 years, life expectancy increased only 1.2 years.

Insurance companies see one more important factor other than medical developments that has added to life expectancy. This is the 55 mile per hour speed limit. Not only is the death toll lower but severe physical injuries are less. Paul A. Rupprecht, Pharmacist, Memorial Hospital, Inc.
