CMeway Of COLUMBUS, MC REALTORS Jim Borke Pressman FAMOUS FOR PRESCRIPTIONS Don Mroczek NSURANCE The USAir crash killed all 132 aboard; all 25 on the United plane died. In another set of votes, the board approved 10 safety recommendations, including one asking Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration to convene a board to ensure the rudder system is made redundant. The rudder panel runs up the tail of an airplane and sweeps the nose left and right.

In a reversal, a jam or misalignment in the controlling linkage could cause it to go in the direction opposite of that which the pilots intend when they press on the rudder pedals. Under those circumstances, a pilot trying to recover from a minor control problem as was the case for the crashes and the near-miss -r- could actually make the situation worse. "A rudder reversal scenario will match all three events," Dennis Crider, chairman of the NTSB's Aircraft Performance Group, told the board members Tuesday. SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) The National Transportation Safety Board today declared that a rudder reversal caused the 1994 crash of USAir Flight 427 outside Pittsburgh, as well as a 1991 crash in Colorado and another near-crash in 1996.

Wrapping up a two-day hearing into the cause of the USAir accident, the board concluded unanimously that the current design of the rudder system on the Boeing 737 the type of plane involved in all three cases is not "reliably redundant." The 737 is the only commercial aircraft that has two rudder control systems which merge in a single hydraulic valve. The board agreed that a jam of that valve caused the crash of Flight 427, the 1991 crash of United Airlines Flight 585 outside Colorado Springs, and a 1996 incident in which the pilots of an Eastwind Airlines 737 struggled to maintain control of their aircraft as they prepared to land in Richmond, Va.
