6A Record The Columbus, Telegram Sunday, April 14, 19 Budget woes force Stromsburg school cut Obituaries Rose Brake Meetings Roundup KINSLEY, Kan. Rose Marie Brake, 88, of Kinsley, died Sunday, April 7, 199(3, at Edwards County Hospital in Kinsley. Services were Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Of-ferle, with the Rev. Bill Vogel officiating.

Burial was in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Kinsley. Mrs. Brake was born March 29, 1908, at Tarnov, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Koziol) Nosul. A longtime resident of Kinsley, she was a homemaker.

On May 2, 1933, she married Anthony John Brake. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth of Laurel, Larry of Wichita, and Emmett of Kinsley; four daughters, Bernadette Burghart of Boulder, Jaye Brake Campbell and Marge, both of Las Vegas, and Theresa of Kinsley; three sisters, Clara Nosal of Council Bluff's, Iowa, Francis Kula of Columbus and Mae Haar of Sandulsky, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 8, 1971. Memorials may be sent to the St. Nicholas Endowment Fund, Arrowhead West, Guadalupe Clinic, Wichita, or to donor's choice.

Edward Nielsen COLUMBUS Edward M. Nielsen, 58, 1860 W. Camino Real, died Friday, April 12, 1996, at his home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church of Columbus with the Revs.

Ernest Smith and Michael Klatt officiating. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Homeof'Columbus. Irene Leimser OSCEOLA Irene G. Leimser, 86, RR 2, died Friday, April 12, 1996, at Columbus Community Hospital Inc.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Marys Church-Pilsno in rural Osceola with the Rev. Peter Gadient officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery of Shelby.

By ALANA CENT Special to the Telegram STROMSBURG Budget constraints caused by recently approved property tax bills have caused the Stromsburg School Board to cut an elementary school principal position, officials said.

The board this week decided not to fill a vacancy at the elementary school. Duties under that job will be handled by other school administrators, but it is not yet clear how the workload will be distributed. The board also approved a petty cash fund that will be used to take care of minor general fund expenditures. The fund is not to exceed $2,500. The eighth- and ninth-grade math position remains vacant, as well as the boys basketball head coaching position.

The board hopes to hire one individual to fill both slots. No action was taken on salary negotiations, but the board will be meeting with staff next week to discuss wages. Fullerton school officials review building plans The Fullerton School Board has set a May 6 special meeting to formally accept construction plans for school renovations. David Stirtz of Architectural mbbbbb District COUTt Aaron Ross, 39, 1873 27th entered a plea of no contest and was found guilty on one count of first-degree sexual assault. Ross is scheduled to be sentenced May 3.

Richard E. Cemper, 45, David City was sentenced to an indeterminant prison term of no more than 1 0 years and no less than five after entering a no contest plea to Nov. 23 charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and delivery of a controlled substance (marijuana). Cemper will be eligible for parole in two and a half years with credit for 115 days served. He has a mandatory release date with good behavior in five years.

Jason Metcalf, 22, 3804 18th was sentenced to 30 months probation after pleading guilty to an Oct. 14 charge of aiding and abetting burglary. Metcalf was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of S31 1 .04 and complete his GED in one year. His sentence also carried 60 hours of community service and 30 days in jail beginning May1. Bradley Kielian, 24, Silver Creek, entered guilty pleas on two counts of second degree forgery and will be sentenced on May 1 0.

County Court Frank Medrano, 39, Aurora, received a S250 fine after pleading guilty to a Feb. 19 charge of disorderly conduct. Craig Bialas, 20, 559 Ninth will be sentenced April 30 after pleading guilty to one count of driving under suspension and one count of no valid registration, Gary Gerber, 22, Monroe, received six months probation, a S200 fine and had his license impounded for 60 days after pleading guilty to a March 2 charge of driving while intoxicated. Dennis Lacina, 25, 2765 38th received a S75 fine and 30 days informal probation after pleading guilty to a Feb. 9 charge of driving under suspension.

Roberto Rena, 21, 16 Evergreen Trailer Court, received a $75 sentence after pleading guilty to one count of no proof of registration. Enrique DeLeon, 30, Schuyler, was sentenced to 1 4 days in jail for an August charge of violation of a learner's permit. Vincente Barraza, 23, 732 Countryview Estates, was sentenced to 60 days in jail, had his license suspended for 60 days and was fined $250 after pleading guilty to a December charge of driving while intoxicated-second offense. Cesar Vinaly, 22, 603 Countryview Estates, will be sentenced May 7 after pleading The board discussed negotiation strategies and listened to the evaluation of teaching personnel during 30 minutes of executive session. The board renewed all contracts for personnel that had not resigned.

Newman Grove school officials talk computers Media specialist Linda Patzel discussed the use of computers in media centers with the Newman Grove School Board Monday night. During this monthly curriculum review, Patzel explained the importance of adding both computers and text references in the media center. Jim Dyck of Architectural Partnership presented a projected time line for the construction of the new high school building. Geotechnical Service Inc. of Grand Island was awarded the bid for soil surveys in the area of the future school building.

The survey will give architects information about subsurface composition and compaction. The approved contract is for $1,710. No action was taken on four bids submitted for landscaping work south of the modular classrooms. Record $100. Brook W.

She is surv ived by three sons, Allyn and Dave, both of Columbus, and Robert of Richland; four daughters, Dorolene Husmann and Janet Bollig, both of Columbus, Connie Stempek of Duncan and Rhonda Wozniak of Kearney; one brother, Carroll Hahn of Columbus; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on May 30, 1990, one sister and one son. The architect will be asked about possible destruction of the landscaping during the future construction and a decision will be made once that information is obtained.

The general budget will be amended to allow the addition of a special education transportation lift that will be attached to the new school bus, which was ordered last month, and the building budget must be amended to allow expenditures for the new building construction. Luther Holler gave his administrative rexrt which outlined future meetings he will be attending in regards to staff'development. The 1996-97 school calendar was approved and includes 177 student days. Classes will start Aug. 20 and will dismiss May 21.

Contracts for all current certificated staff members were approved. A policy concerning posting of emergency board meetings had its final reading. Summer maintenance projects were reviewed and the board authorized administrators to secure bids for multiple projects. Decisions over what projects will be pursued will be made April 29 at a special meeting. $25.

The board also hired a project designer from Venus Consulting Inc. of Orchard to oversee the asbestos removal in the areas to be renovated and in the elementary school, which is set to be demolished. Policies concerning sexual harassment for both personnel and students were adopted. Rebecca Edwards was hired to teach vocal music for grades 7-12 and instrumental music for grades 5-12. Edwards is scheduled to graduate in May from the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

The board heard an update on the three-year technology plan. The board will try to make budget allotments for 25 Alpha Smart machines, used to teach elementary keyboarding, and additional computer software in the 1996-97 budget. The policy concerning use of school facilities was amended and revised, and facilities won't be available on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, or Easter. Alberto Guzman, 21, Madison, received a $75 fine after pleading guilty to a March 3 charge of no proof of financial responsibility.

Miguel Lopez, 24, 664 Countryview Estates, will be sentenced May 7 after pleading guilty to an October charge of third degree assault. Hector Hernandez, 29, Grand Island, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and had his license revoked for two years after pleading guilty to a January charge of driving while intoxicated. Shane Andrews, 19, 4010 E. Fifth was sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary after being found guilty of an April charge of aiding and abetting a false report. Brad Temus, 20, Genoa, was sentenced to 60 days in jail, one year probation, received a $1 ,000 fine and had his license revoked for six months after pleading guilty to a December charge of obstructing a peace officer.

Richard Vanderhorst, 40, RR2 Columbus, received two $1 00 fines for one count of careless driving and one count of refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test stemming from a Dec. 9 incident. Max Efinger, 29, RR1 Columbus, will be sentenced May 16 after pleading guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated-third offense. Brad Fitzgerald, 24, 231 1 1 1th will be sentenced May 7 after pleading guilty to a December charge of driving under suspension. Paul Wunderlich, 31, 2663 47th was sentenced to six months probation, received a $200 fine and had his license impounded for 60 days after pleading guilty to a February charge of driving while intoxicated-first offense.

Joseph Beltran, 23, 2 Silver Traitor Court, received a $75 fine and seven days informal probation after pleading guilty to driving under suspension. He also received a $1 00 fine after pleading guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from a November incident. until Oct. 10, 1945. 1 le was stationed in China, Burma and the India theaters. He married Agnes Kobza Aug. 7, 1945, in Brainard and farmed in the Ulysses and David City area for 40 years before retiring and moving to Columbus in 1986.

He was a member of the church, American Legion Post 110 in Dwight and the Catholic Workman Organization. He is survived by his wife; seven sons, Ronald J. of Denver, John D. of Bartlesville, Thomas L. of Kansas City, Les F.

of Nashville, Steven A. of Salem, Scott M. of Racine, and Paul S. of Lincoln; two daughters, Paulette Shank of Denver and Carol Glasshoff of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Wilma Megill of Denver and Agnes Vanek of St. Louis; one brother, Victor Hottovy of David City; and 22 grandchildren.
